Partners meeting in Estonia 18.-23.10.2011
Tuesday 18th of October:
- We arrived in Estonia at different times. All of us stayed in St.Barbara in Tallinn.
Wednseday 19th of October:
- We had a guided tour in school with the principal to see some of the classrooms and the swimming pool and to meet some of the students when they were working.
- “Mysterious” workshop: All guests gathered in one of the arts and crafts rooms to make a surprise. We worked out a box in clay and made a casting and after that lunch in the school canteen.
Project meeting: Soffia wished welcome and thanked the host for the warm welcome. All participant schools reported what they had done since the last meeting in Iceland.
- Iceland: Iceland has made time for the Comenius work on the timetable for the teachers that participate the project. Cooperated with experts and visited a power plant near the river Elliðaá. Pupils in classes 4 and 8 have written a text in English and Icelandic after the visit. Made a PowerPoint presentation about housing materials, energy resources and consumption, different architecture and lifestyles. They walked in the surroundings of the school to study homes and took photos of different houses. Pupils were sent home with a form to study consumption of warm water and electricity and if they walk, cycle or drive to school.
- Norway: Pupils in classes 6 and 7 have done some researches at home to find out how their homes are built according to building materials. They found out how many kWh and water their family uses during each season and totally through the year. Every pupil made their own PowerPoint presentation where they presented what they had found out.
- Poland: Worked on pollution in their district. What is the situation in the forest and in the air? Made a short trip into a forest near by the school where they found litter and took pictures. Encouraged parents to take part in a car free day and not drive the children to school. They counted the cars in front of the school this day and another day to compare the number. There was a difference. Made posters on this. PowerPoint presentation: They worked on energy and their houses: Architecture, building materials, from where they get the water, sewage system, costs of gas and electricity, how to get to school and lifestyle (sporting, TV, books). Will work out the details and the PowerPoint soon. They will work on saving energy too.
- Italy: They have visited a geothermic power plant. Worked with classes 1 – 5 on houses and lifestyle. They have studied three different kinds of houses and talked about the fact that houses in the cities and in the countryside are different. They
have studied houses in the history – about building materials from ancient times until today, and traditional houses in the different areas of Italy. Through pictures they show different kinds of lifestyle in the houses. Classes 2 and 3 have studied their own houses and how to save energy. Classes 4 and 5 have studied the consumption of energy of different machines and they have compared the differences in energy consumption. Life style: How to go to school: They have filled in a form also on CO2 and consumption of petrol. How many trees will they need to consume all the CO2 from the ways they go to school?
- Estonia: The students have worked out a PowerPoint presentation about houses and the building materials, energy resources, consumption and lifestyle after studies of houses nearby the school.
- Greece: They have made a PowerPoint presentation on heating of houses now and in history, about collecting and using rain water. They have studied old and modern houses in Vrontados and taken photos. Made a questionnaire to the pupils about the facts on energy consumption in houses. The results will be presented in Excel.
- The web-site: We send the stuff we work out to the drop box so estonians can put it on the web site. We will need a signed acceptance from the parents of the students that participate in the project to show pictures, videos of the pupils and their work on the open website. We discuss via e-mail the further work on the website.
- The dictionary: These are the last words in the common dictionary: House, Ceiling, Attic, Room, Chimney, Garage, Wall, Basement, Dining room, Door, Kitchen, Balcony, Floor, Bathroom, Stairs, Roof, Bedroom, Garden, Window, Living room
* We visited AHHAA Science Centre (www.ahhaa.ee) which is a center where we could experience what it is like being blind. A guide leaded us through a “landscape” with a park with trees and houses, onto a boat and further to a café. We all walked with the white stick to find our way and if the terrain was secure. This was a very interesting experience.
* Priit guided us through The Old City before we had dinner at the restaurant Kaerajan.
Thursday 20th of October:
- Visiting classrooms.
- “Garbage Wolf” visited school with a stand equipped for teaching on how to recycle at home.
Project meeting: We discussed the further work on the project.
- Communication between pupils: We will use SKYPE.
- No. 16 in the application: “Pupils will brainstorm and work on ideas on how to save energy. Ideas will be shared with partners on the common website”: We have been working on this and we have presented some of the ideas in the PowerPoint presentations where we did a research on housing materials, energy resources and consumption. Now we make another PP to show ideas on how to save energy.
- No 17: “Drama; pupils in groups will play different government officials. Debating which aspects of the home is most important and if laws need to be passed. Proposals will be shared and compared.” Prepare arguments for and arguments against in two groups. Then come together and debate. Could also be a prepared drama. This depends on the age of the
pupils. We record our work.
- The weather observation: we do the measuring 14th to 18th of November. We use the same form and symbols as last time. The next measurement will be 30th of January to 3rd of February 2012. The last measurement is 7th to 11th of May 2012.
* Visiting the Energy Centre where we were presented to philosophic thoughts about the universe before we tried different
experimental equipment to experience facts on energy.
* Kaidi’s activities: We met Kaidi and Eve and followed them to the top of the tower of St. Olav church. We reached the tower just at sunset and had a beautiful view over Tallinn before we walked the 258 steps down again. Then we went to a restaurant to have a nice dinner together.
Friday 21st of October:
- We participated the ending ceremony of the 1st semester. Pupils were dancing a traditional and a modern dance, singing, playing the flute and a young boy read a poem. It was nice to watch them and to see the high quality of their performance.
- Visitors gave lessons in different classes.
- Tour in bus to South Estonia accompanied by teachers from Pelgulinna Gymnasium. On the way we visited the Estonian Broadcasting Museum where we heard about the history of Estonian radio and TV almost up to today. Then we went on to Viljandi where we visited Conda’s Centre and saw his paintings from one of his first up to his later ones. He was a naive painter. Some other artists were also presented in this gallery, among them a Norwegian painter. We walked around on our own for a while before we had a nice dinner at Aida Kohvik. In the evening we visited the Estonian Traditional Music Centre where we learnt a traditional dance.
Saturday22nd of October:
- Swimming and sauna at the Kalev Spa.
Project meeting: Dimitri showed us different websites on Chios to give us an idea about the island. An Estonian girl that had taken part in a European program on Chios told us a bit about her experiences from the year she stayed there. Dimitri needs information during February on how many will come to Chios and when we arrive and go home again.
- We had an interesting excursion in the Kiek in the Kök and in The Bastion Passages.
- We had the nice farewell dinner at Karja Kelder.
